SSIEM Academy 2010
SSIEM Academy course

Applications are invited from clinicians and laboratory scientists training in inherited metabolic disease, for a 2 day SSIEM academy course to be held in Manchester, UK. There will be separate teaching for clinicians and laboratory scientists which will run concurrently but with a joint session to discuss clinical cases.
The programme will include the following topics:
· Disorders of purines and pyrimidines
· The mucopolysaccharidoses & oligosaccharidoses
· Peroxisomal Disorders
Teaching will be a combination of lectures, group working and interactive sessions. The educational aims are as follows but with each course having a somewhat different emphasis:
· To have an understanding of the relevant metabolic pathways
· To understand the methods used for investigating the particular disorders
· To be able to interpret normal and abnormal results resulting from these investigations
· To know the different clinical presentations, complications and outcome
· To understand the management of these disorders including the use of ERT in mucopolysaccharidoses
There will be no charge for the course and 2 nights accommodation with breakfast and lunch will also be provided. Students will need to fund their own travel and evening meals.

Applications should state which course is being applied for (clinical or laboratory) and include a brief CV detailing experience in inherited metabolic disorders and a letter of support from the head of department or from a senior colleague.

Workshop on Disorders of Propionate & B12 Metabolism
A MetBioNet workshop on disorders of vitamin B12 and propionate metabolism will be held at Birmingham Children’s Hospital on Wednesday 29th September 2010.
